Understanding Zakat

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam and is a mandatory act of charity for every eligible Muslim. It requires giving 2.5% of your total qualifying wealth annually to those in need. Zakat purifies your wealth and helps distribute resources within the community.

What is Nisab?

Nisab is the minimum threshold of wealth a Muslim must possess before Zakat becomes obligatory. It is calculated based on the value of either 7.5 tola (87.48 grams) of gold or 52.5 tola (612.36 grams) of silver. If your net zakatable assets exceed the Nisab, you are required to pay Zakat.

Which Assets are Zakatable?

  • Cash in hand and in bank accounts
  • Gold and silver (jewelry, coins, bars)
  • Investments, shares, and saving certificates
  • Business inventory and trade goods
  • Money owed to you that is expected to be repaid

How to Use This Calculator

Enter your cash holdings, gold and silver values, investments, and trade goods. Then subtract any liabilities such as debts, wages owed, or bills due immediately. The calculator will check your net wealth against the Nisab threshold and compute 2.5% as your Zakat obligation.

When Should You Pay Zakat?

Zakat is due once a full Islamic (lunar) year has passed since your wealth first exceeded the Nisab. Many Muslims choose to pay during Ramadan for increased blessings, but it can be paid at any time of the year as long as the conditions are met.
